Rot is a fun pop punk romp, with fantastic guitar tone and playing, anthemic vocals, driving drums, and an enviable amount of energy. Lyrically, the song feels appropriate to the daily stress of the world we live in, with a line like “I’m doing something productive with my self-destruction”, being rather prescient.

“Everything sucks and that’s OK, because it sucks for everybody,” says front man Stefan Babcock.

“And we can make it a little bit better by being together in the shittiness.”

This philosophy is apparent through their new release, with the band forming the EP from discarded tracks from their last album, Morbid Stuff, that they wanted to still share with their fans, especially as they seemed relevant in the COVID-19 landscape.

We have so much negativity, and sometimes it becomes so extreme and ridiculous that we start to find it funny.

“Literally any city, whether it was Lethbridge, Alberta, or New York City, we’d be like, ‘This place sucks ass.’ We have so much negativity, and sometimes it becomes so extreme and ridiculous that we start to find it funny. But at this moment in time, it feels so fucking real” the band say.

“So, wherever you live, whatever your circumstances, this is an EP about the place you’re from, and the place you’re at now.”

PUP are also planning a livestream concert titled This Stream Sucks Ass on 23rd October, 2020 at 9 pm AEST, which will be directed by the bands long-time collaborator Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux.

“What can you expect from the livestream? Like most regular PUP shows, it’ll probably be a bit of a train wreck, which is really all part of the magic. We don’t know if it’ll be any good, but we do promise it will be weird and different from any livestream you’ve ever seen.” the band says.

“It will be fun and unhinged and entirely unprofessional. Am I selling it? I think I’m selling it.”
