Described as their most ambitious, yet effortlessly-accessible track to date, Can’t Get What You Want sees Dental Plan delivering an immensely soaring indie-punk anthem. With dual male/female vocals, fuzzed-out guitars, and the classic loud/soft dynamic, it’s an immense track that encompasses themes of loss, determination, and hope.
“This is a break-up song, written at a crossroads in my life,” explains vocalist Niam Hegarty. “I had a hell of a dark period, took a long walk to my favourite burger shop, and when I arrived home I wrote this song on an acoustic guitar with the lyrics and music fully formed.
“It took only a few minutes and we had a tune, I hope it holds that raw emotion,” he adds. “Originally, we had intended to record this acoustically, but it sounded so great with Jo’s vocals and the full fuzzed out guitar sound we stuck with that for the record.”
Considered and emotional, yet not lacking any of the punchy delivery they’re known for, Can’t Get What You Want sees the group showcasing many of their influences, including the likes of The Menzingers, Militarie Gun, and Magic Dirt.
Dental Plan will also be launching the new single with a special release show at Melbourne’s Retreat Hotel on Thursday, May 30th. The free event will see them supported by Echo Social Club, Future Tongues, and Unscored, and will also see the band shooting footage for their upcoming music video.
The new track follows on from the release of previous singles such as Raw Nerve and Landslide, which have received airplay from Double J and various community radio stations, and resulted in placement on numerous playlists from Spotify and Apple Music.
All the singles will appear on Dental Plan’s newly-announced debut album, Raw Nerve, which is set for release on July 19th. Alongside the standard digital release, the album will also be made available on limited edition Blood Red vinyl, with pre-orders available now.
Ever since they first formed back in 2018, Dental Plan have been a favourite of the Melbourne music scene, playing with incendiary international acts such as Mean Jeans, The D4, and local heroes such as River Of Snakes and Persecution Blues.
Leaning into their eclectic indie-punk vibe for their first EPs, they returned in 2019 with a release which saw them working with Alicia Bognanno from Sub Pop indie-rockers Bully. In 2021, they returned with the brutal Hole In Me, which leaned further into ‘90s grunge territory, and saw Dental Plan named by Rolling Stone Australia as a band to watch.
Pre-order Raw Nerve now via digital download, and vinyl here.
Since forming in 2018, Dental Plan have honed an eclectic brand of indie punk taking influence from 90s alt/rock and melodic punk. Their 2018 self-titled EP was followed in 2019 with an EP which saw the group working with Alicia from Sub Pop Indie Rockers Bully.
In 2021, the group returned with the brutal single ‘Hole In Me’, seeing them enter early ‘90s grunge territory. Paired with a brutal horror-themed video which didn’t hold back on the gore and mayhem, the thunderous riffs and throat-shredding vocals saw Dental Plan named by Rolling Stone Australia as a band to watch.
