BAD PARTY // Meet Bris-Vegas’ Newest Heavy Exports

It’s become a foregone conclusion that Brisbane boasts some of the most fertile soil for exciting up-and-coming heavy bands in the country, and Bad Party are no exception.

“Yep, we’re all Brissy boys!” says frontman Henry Epong when we link up for a chat, both to introduce the band and chew the fat on new single Sinking In.

“We’ve all got musical backgrounds – we did bands and all that kind of thing through high school and cut our teeth playing locally – so because of that it’s been really easy coming together and working out how to build this project from scratch.”

On a surface level, Bad Party resembles a slick contemporary metalcore act – quality performance video clips, punk jumps and all.

However, a spin of Sinking In showcases a group with a certain knack for catchy hooks and an impressive know-how of making a song greater than the sum of it’s breakdowns – something that countless bands that passed through the hallowed halls of Crowbar failed at.

“We really like our big bouncy riffs, we’re big fans of bands that have that huge sound with three or four guitar tracks … we’re not thinking too much about how it’ll sound live at the moment – we really just wanna make the best possible record that we can,” says Epong.

“Bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Architects and all that kind of thing … we really love the idea that you don’t have to be screaming the whole time, and trying to create songs that non-metal listeners will still be drawn to.”

Another point of difference with Bad Party is their 4-piece approach rather than a duel guitars, double vocalist attack. As Epong points out, the arrival of newest member Daniel Long on guitars allowed each member to invest in their musical station, while allowing more room for melodic expression.

“With Dan coming on board, we’ve been able to take in a whole extra side of musical influence while still staying true to what we set out to do with Run,” says Epong.

“One of the biggest things was not having to think about how I was going to go onstage playing and singing – it’s allowed me to really be able to work on the vocals and the lyrical side of things way more.

“It’s been great for me, and now everyone can really just hone in on their own station.”

With only two songs in the world (their first single Run was released in January) it’s still early days for Bad Party.

Thankfully though, it looks like we won’t have to wait another eight months to hear more from the band.

“We’ve got a body of work coming – from Sinking In we’ve got song after song to come,” promises Epong.

“There’s not going to be more than 4-5 gigs at a time where we don’t have new music out there.”

Sinking In is out now on all platforms.
