SOCIETY OF BEGGARS // The Year Of The Beggar

Dark, mysterious and damn addictive, Society of Beggars new tune, Dance the Evil, was well worth the almost two-year wait!

As the follow up from 2019’s God Mode, the track marks yet another step towards their upcoming record Levitator. With it officially out in the world, we caught up with brothers Yianni (vocals) and Jim (guitar) Michalopoulos for a chat.

Hysteria: For those new to the band, tell us about yourselves and how you came together.

Jim: We’re all brothers from another mother or sisters from another mister except me and my brother, who are actual brothers from the same mother.

Yianni: Our dad was in a band, so our upbringing was very musical. Though at first, he never wanted us to start a band “You’ll wake up on random people’s floors, eating baked beans on toast every night, playing at some dank bar!” That all sounded alright to us.

Dance the Evil’s a killer track. What’s the story behind it?

Dance the Evils about being drawn to someone in a powerful way. The post-grunge feel to it is kind of just what happens when we play together.
[ Yianni Michalopoulos ]

Jim: Well, thank you. I think it was a conscious effort sound wise to hone our strengths down into the loud/quiet/loud style of bands we love, like the Pixies and Nirvana, but bringing our own flavour to it.

Yianni: It’s about being drawn to someone in a powerful way. The post-grunge feel to it is kind of just what happens when we play together. Dibi’s drumming style and Nicoli’s basslines are steeped in that vibe so effortlessly.

What was the writing/recording process like? Give us a memorable moment.

Jim: All I can remember is laying down so many guitar tracks that I thought, ‘how much more guitar could you get?’ And the answer is none, none more guitar.

It’s been a few years since you guys released your debut EP. What have you been up to since?

Jim: We got back down to bare bones, just us in a room with mini amps and no effects and wrote a tonne of material that was whittled down over time until we felt we captured the story we’re telling with our album.

Yianni: I’m precious and sensitive, so after putting out God Mode, our single from 2019, the presentation had to be at the same level for Dance the Evil.

What can you share about your upcoming album, Levitator?

Jim: That it’s going to be big, dark, emotive rock and roll.

What’s in store for your upcoming show at Cherry Bar?

Jim: It’s going to be energetic, and it’s going to get loud. I think all of us have been away from the live scene for so long that we’re just so happy to be able to get together safely and play this music that means so much to us.

Anything additional you’d like to share

Jim: “When you’re married, you’ll understand the importance of fresh produce” – Tony Soprano.
