If the rise of Travis Barker-core has taught us anything, it’s that pop-punk will always have its place, even with naysayers proclaiming its demise.

And more often than not, we’ve seen that the best place to look for new tunes is our own backyard – case in point: Sydney’s Bellwether and their addictive second single Charade.

As impressive as the band’s debut, Shortsighted was, we reckon they’ve one-upped themselves. Charade is a bright and bubbly offering, kicking off with guitars that are both a little frantic and a little whimsical. This sets the pocket rocket tone which defines the rest of the track – in all its hooky, melodic glory. With all that said, it’s ultimately Bellwether’s ability to break the mould that excites us the most.  Even the most diehard pop-punk fan will admit the genre is laden with tired old tropes. And while it can often be difficult for newcomers to set themselves apart, that’s exactly what the quintet has done.

If we had to do battle with Bellwether’s seven evil exes for a chance to experience Charade for the first time again, we’d do it, no questions asked

Charade avoids coming off as juvenile or cliche, and with the legendary Stevie Knight on production duty, we can’t say this surprises us. But, the band has also put in the hard yards to achieve this with their unique lyricism – y’know, them writing from the perspective of Knives Chau (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and wearing their love for all things pop-culture on their sleeves.

Bellwether’s not only a band in full control of their sonic stylings, but also one with the ability to push pop-punk forward. If we had to do battle with their seven evil exes for a chance to experience Charade for the first time again, we’d do it, no questions asked.
