Hysteria: What’s the band’s origin story

Madman: The band’s from Brisbane. We’ve been around since 2015, but I’m the only original member left (laughs). Me and one of the original members, Misha, originally came from Melbourne and formed the band, and that was pretty much how it started.

We have had a few lineup changes. After Misha left, there were a few in-between singers that didn’t work out. We had a bass player and drummer change too. It hasn’t been too bad, though.

What’s the story behind your latest single, Revolution?

It’s an inspirational song. It tries to give people their power back. We didn’t want to delve too much into COVID and tie it back to that. But the last couple of years have been unsettling for people, and we just wanted to give them the motivation to go out there and do what they want.

Give us a view inside the recording studio – how’d it come together?

I do most of the songwriting. This song was probably in the works for three years, to be honest. It was before everything went chaotic, and it was purely a song that aimed to give people back their power.

It was quite a different song when I first started. But when I brought it to the band, we workshopped it. I got a few new ideas for the riff. They were similar to the original one, so they got taken on. Then drums got put on. The lyrics were already there, but Zichxyna (vocals) did change a few of them. That’s how we ended up with that really big, chanting chorus.

We were always in that gothic realm, but now we’re trying to broaden our spectrum and introduce more of a metal/punk feel.

What can we expect from your upcoming EP?

It’s quite themed. It was almost by accident that it happened. We started with Revolution, then wondered what other songs we could put on the EP. Our bassist at the time said we have these really good songs that we play live; why don’t we record them properly? Otherwise, they’ll get chopped off the setlist and forgotten about. Then the theme came through, we were thinking cyber-gothic and apocalyptic,  and then this Mad Max feel came out. It evolved from there.

Who would you most like to share the stage with – dead or alive, and why?

It’d have to be Marilyn Manson. That’s a no-brainer for me. He’s a major influence musically.  We have our own sound, I don’t think we sound like Marilyn Manson, but our music definitely has those origins -the rhythmic drums and that Beautiful People kind of feel.

What’s next?

We’ve kept quiet because we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get these three tracks ready to go. They were recorded quite a while ago, but we’ve sat on them.

The lyric video for Revolution is ready to drop on June 28th, and its music video will follow two weeks after.

Shows-wise, we’ll be putting some together. We’re hoping to reignite our fanbase and build on it. We want a different audience. We were always in that gothic realm, but now we’re trying to broaden our spectrum and introduce more of a metal/punk feel. I hope we can stretch our wings and open up some more doors.
