Thrash Goodness!

Desecrator have been part of the vanguard of local thrash purists for years now, and their latest release doesn’t let the side down.

Summoning is wall to wall with ripping solos, speedy riffs and thunderous drumming, with just a hint of melody and nary a breath of that pesky groove—this is just about as pure as thrash gets.

A somewhat unnecessary intro track segues into the hectic title cut, ready made for the mosh with its gang-vocal one word refrain, and the fun begins. The false endings run on for just a bit long, though. At a show it would no doubt be a hoot, but here it just feels like the band had no idea how the song should end. It’s hardly something to mark Desecrator down too much for, however, and from this point Summoning is just a celebration of thrash metal, a band paying homage to the old school without tumbling down the rabbit hole of straight-up plagiarism, with an energy and vitality that belies a band that’s already been thrashing for more than a decade.

Summoning is another scorching thrasher from Desecrator, delivering the goods for metal yet again.

Crucially, the song writing is varied. While never slowing down to the point of breaking out the acoustics like they did on To the Gallows, Desecrator balance out the furious thrashing of the likes of Hate at First Sight and Manic with a longer, portentous number like A Light in the Dark, each one ablaze with their trademark guitar shred and Riley Strong’s melodious rasp. It’s a voice that stands out in the frenetic world of thrash, just as this album does with its organic, live feel and unadorned, wide-eyed enthusiasm for metal in its purest form. Summoning is another scorching thrasher from Desecrator, delivering the goods for metal yet again.
