The past few years were more than unkind to the music industry at large, but for Sydney alt-metal group SVLEM they have re-emerged ready to cast a spell with a brand new lineup – and a recent new release.

Following the departure of their former frontwoman, SVLEM have amassed an electrifying lineup, recruiting sonic wizard Shah on keys and rhythmic guitar and new vocalist Cécile from French horror metal act Kamera Obscura. Debuting their new force via two new tunes on their latest release The Live Session, with a live version of Nevermore and Adore & Devour lying in wait, SVLEM come into the final months of 2022 with sinewey magic and enrapturing might.

From the swaying magnetism of Nevermore to the razored Adore & Devour, SVLEM coat both live tracks with high octane performances, black magic undertones and wispy synths. Nevermore revels in mixtures of Alice In Chains gloom and oscillating textures, while Adore & Devour instrumentally catches at the likes of Gojira while vocalist Cécile croons and prowls with glossy angst throughout.

With the raw viscosity of a live setting, The Live Session does at times find itself somewhat doused in the group’s building wall of sound, but there’s definitely a spark visible across the two tracks that hints at some very big and mythical things to come from the group as they stride into this new collective chapter. As bewitching as their namesake and primed to take on the world, come and discover a new slice of Australian alternative metal with SVLEM. And if you’re in Sydney, you can catch the group on Friday 21 October at the Burdekin Hotel for the Halloween Spookshow, alongside Our Last Enemy, Witchgrinder and Carmeria
