Now, 6 months later we get to finally hear the new sound that the lads were teasing. With their debut EP Panic having recently dropped, we thought it would be the perfect time to touch back in with the Melbourne based metal outfit to see how things have been going since the unveiling of their new sound.

“It’s been surreal,” states the group’s bass player Lucas Banim when asked about the reception Panic has been receiving.

“It has definitely exceeded our expectations” he continues, “For us, these songs have been written for so long that we almost kind of think, ‘oh yeah, that song.’ You just get so used to them being files in your computer that you kind of forget that so many people haven’t heard it yet. Now, seeing the power of just one week of having them out in the world and seeing people react and scream along to lyrics that you wrote in your bedroom, like three years ago, it’s just surreal.”

Whilst the band has attained almost immediate success, with the Panic launch show selling out last weekend, Banim maintains that the group is not getting carried away, instead using the momentum as a driving force to achieve greater goals.

“We’re in this for the long run. We’re not getting caught up in celebrating the successes of each little milestone along the way. It’s just humbling at the end of the day, because it makes you think and realise that the more that you put into this, the more that you learn. It really makes me think about all the bands that are a couple of steps ahead of us, and how much work they’re putting in.”

“Plus, I think it’s borderline impossible to actually be egotistical about it, because at the end of the day, it’s still just the same music that was sitting in the files on your computer for two years, the only difference now is that people are actually able to hear and engage with it and enjoy it. But at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about really.”

With Panic unveiling heavier tones than one may expect from its lead single Wearing Thin, Banim discussed the “crossroads” type moment that the band faced when first entering the studio.

“We were pretty much just at a crossroads and we didn’t really know what to do.”

“We really liked playing rock music, as a general umbrella term, but the music that we listen to is a lot heavier, so we also want to play metal, especially as it’s more interesting live.”

“We were kind of just getting sick of playing the same four chords over and over. So to be honest, the whole new sound kind of started in waves. Lead To Ruin was the first song that we wrote as a group and that was the first time we were like, ‘Alright, we’re gonna go heavier.’ After that, everything else just kind of followed suit, Wearing Thin for instance was a really natural one to write because it felt authentic to our sound. Even with Worm, we wanted to push ourselves towards embracing even heavier elements.”

“Ultimately, we just want to be an interesting blend of everything,” he confirms.

Having dropped Panic, Nth Rd are wasting no time, with Banim stating that  “complacency” will never be a part of the group’s ethos, instead confirming that the group are already back writing, with the success of Panic having only ignited the fire more”.
