With the world’s music scene in lockdown in 2020 artists had to be creative in the way that delivered their music to their loyal fans.

For a lot of bands the best way to do that was to do an online show. For some it worked really well but for others it became very obvious that playing online was never going to generate the same intensity as a live gig—and to be honest the artists who got the most of the experience were those that were willing to do things a little differently—such as Evanescence who just had Amy Lee go solo with her piano.

One of the band’s that took the live online gig route was groove metal behemoths Lamb Of God. They of course had no issue attracting a legion of fans to watch them online and now the band and their label have gone one step further and released the online experience as an album with some added bonuses. Listening to Lamb Of God Live In Richmond, VA is an interesting experience. Is it good to be able to listen to the band when we have been starved of them live for over twelve months? YES!!! Does this as an album bring anything new to the table? NOT REALLY!

There is no doubt that Lamb Of God’s hardcore fans are going to lap up this album.

Any purist will tell you that normally a live album should be an absolute stand-out. Take Nirvana’s From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah for example. There is an angst and aggression on that album that you could only get from Nirvana live. Kurt is feeding off the crowd and the crowd getting their energy from him. And that is the first thing you notice when you are listening to Lamb Of God here—the lack of crowd. That is not to say that there is no energy on this album. Quite the contrary, the boys produce a high energy version of Gears and they are flying by the time they get to On The Hook. The issue here is that without the energy and sounds of a crowd this album at times feels like a simple ‘Best Of …’ and tracks like New Colossal Hate and Poison Dream simply feel like a band going through the motions.

The gems or special moments created on this album are the haunting vocals from Randy Blythe on Memento Mori and Bloodshot Eyes and the pure aggression with a Middle Eastern tinge that the band manages to bring to the table with Contractor. Then there is the awesome garage band feel that comes across on Reality Bath … and as it closes you find yourself wishing that more tracks on the album had that atmosphere to it.

Of course one of the most exciting things about Lamb Of God Live In Richmond, VA is that it features the first live performance of Lamb Of God’s awesome new track The Death Of Us which was written while in quarantine for the comedy gem Bill & Ted Face The Music. Great track, but if that is what most fans were after perhaps an EP rather than an album was a better option.

There is no doubt that Lamb Of God’s hardcore fans are going to lap up this album, but if you are a casual listener than you are probably better off going back over their older albums.

STANDOUT TRACKS: The Death Of Us, Gears, Contractor
STICK THIS NEXT TO: Trivium, Soulfly, DevilDriver
