Midnight Control, their latest offering, will resonate with anyone feeling the winter blues. And it’s seen the Californians do what they do best – a feel-good blend of reggae, hip-hop and rock.
There’s no denying the record lacks a creative edge, but it more than makes up for this with its grooviness and consistency. Laidback to its core, Midnight Control is the soundtrack for sunny days, nights spent dancing barefoot on the beach and road trips with mates. We reckon it’s even tailor-made for family BBQs with that uncle who reckons music attained perfection in 1974. There are standout moments within – namely the vocal performance on the title track and the minimalist, ethereal beats on Shade.

We’ve also got to shout out closing track Live Your Life, with anthemic lines like “diamond rings ain’t worth shit in caskets.” Dirty Heads have not pulled any magic tricks out of their hat with this record. Nor have they offered technical prowess or morose, poetic musings. What they have offered is soul soothing melodies that will reward listeners with each and every listen. Ultimately, if you’re searching for a musical pick me up, Midnight Control is for you.
