The second single from upcoming album You’re Welcome, A Day To Remember have mastered the art of balance in this song, formulating a winning combination in the arrangement that pushes and pulls on the emotional narratives with a pretty sleek delivery. It’s all in keeping with their traditional amalgamation of metalcore and pop-punk, but this single signals a new turn in the band’s sonic nature.
The guitars can ring out with a gravelly defiance just as well as they can sing a sad song, moving between the conflicting sentiments with a fluidity that you don’t expect. Likewise, the vocals are reminiscent of struggle and strife while still delivering an overwhelming sense of hope. All this upheld by driving rhythms that see the sentiments home. The verses particularly carry an abundance of texture, rhythms mounted with claps, short sharp drum hits and a funky bassline—it’s all pretty catchy stuff.
Resentment is the perfect marriage of history and the future, emulating the sounds and styles A Day To Remember have explored in the past, and introducing themselves as they want to be heard moving forward.
Where lead single Degenerates had a pretty anthemic punk run, running with bolstering riffs and overexposed lyrics, A Day To Remember explore darker sides of their being with Resentment, piling up the vigour. The accompanying video meets the requirements for contradiction, too. The band are seen engulfed by fire (literally), the music almost made to put out the volatile imagery and sensations generated. The calmer, more sensitive aspects of the song are illuminated beautifully with a mysterious smoke that acts as a foundation for the chaos to ensue, A Day To Remember piling up the sonic and visual action.
