When considering their backstory, this makes a whole lot of sense. Bandmates Dave McAnally and Matt Kettman, first jammed together over 20 years ago, cutting their teeth on the Iowa heavy scene. Now, they’ve paid tribute to the sounds that got them to where they are, building on influences like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Iron Maiden while adding a personal, and genuine, touch with their own stories and experiences.

So instead of falling back on lyrical tropes from their youth, like angst or teenage heartbreak, Purgatory Line has instead focused on growth, evolution and rising to new challenges. The Bottom is a particularly strong example of this, building on the struggles of living for the machine and not making any real progress in life. And while we won’t deny Purgatory Line’s appeal to the dad-rock crowd, huge singalong choruses (see: Yield) and soaring melodies (see: Menagerie) are sure to hype up rock fans of any age.
