The pop-punk unit say they draw inspiration from the likes of Gang of Youths and Ceres to create their own unique sound and set themselves apart from the cliché that ‘every band that comes out of Darwin is a metal act.’

Draftday’s Misspent boasts a driving drumline, addictive riffs and an unfaltering bassline—basically everything you could want in a track. The lyrics explore the honest representation of what goes through your head after being hurt.

The track invokes that blurred headspace through instrumentation that feels as if it were barely holding itself together, it’s frenzied and unapologetic.

“Heartbreak often brings out the worst in us, it lets childish and self-centred emotions in when we have a blurred sense of rational judgement. So the concept of dealing with loss in this way was the basis for the song Misspent, it felt important to include a song that addressed this mental state as we often disregard it as a brief lapse of character, rather than an underlying (regressive) response to our fear of being alone.,” say Draftday. “Misspent was a step out of our comfort zone as a band, for the majority of our writing prior to this song we had been pretty centred on a specific sound and approach to how we wrote together, this was the catalyst track that made us re-evaluate the original idea of what Draftday was and allowed us to work in a more ‘Genre-Fluid’ mindset.”

“The track invokes that blurred headspace through instrumentation that feels as if it were barely holding itself together, it’s frenzied and unapologetic. Which is such a stand out approach from the rest of the EP, where the focus is more on trying to understand these feelings from a self-analytical state, approaching empathy over apathy.”

The band have also dropped a stunning music video to accompany the song, a psychedelic, glitchy, masterpiece that uses low-fi aesthetics to represent the dark and introspective subject matter of the game. The impressive video was directed and produced entirely by the band.

Draftday formed in Darwin in late 2018 and have been making waves ever since. Their first singles Soap and En Soi achieved radio play and music media acclaim while the band built a dedicated following through live shows and releases.

In 2019, the band wrote, recorded and self-produced their debut EP When I Went Away, which will be released in May 2020. In the meantime, Draftday’s brand new single Misspent is available now.
