The new song comes with a simple yet well-shot new video, seeing the band playing in a warehouse alongside several cutaways of their new lead singer Alex Dedecius drowning underwater. According to Dedecius, the clip’s use of water is symbolic for the underlying meaning of the track, which depicts an argument that can never be solved in what the band describes as a ‘love song turned sour’.

Follow Me Down is a catchy and inventive new track from Phoenix Day, proving that the band have a strong idea of the genre they’re playing in and how to differentiate themselves from other bands in their scene.

“The symbolism of water used throughout the music video represents the suffocating nature of this endless cycle, as it makes one feel as though they are drowning in a void of anger and misery. The more sinister element of the tale is the implication of a desire to continue this toxic pattern, suggesting a love of confrontation. Do you like me? Then fight me; let me pull you down the path of discord,” says Dedecius. The song itself draws strong comparisons to the likes of post-hardcore legends A Day To Remember, as it effortlessly transitions between Dedecius’ metalcore screams and his catchy pop-punk hooks. Instrumentally, the song similarly moves between heavier breakdowns and more melodic and upbeat riffs, always keeping the listener guessing.

Follow Me Down also has a great sense of energy and playfulness, with some funky guitar work sneaking out behind the earworm clean vocals. The more heavy, hardcore elements that creep into the song almost trick listeners into thinking they’re going to get something else, as the track incorporates a lot of heavier elements into the band’s more alt-rock/post-hardcore sound.

Each element within the song fits perfectly into place, with the mellow bridge towards the end giving the song breathing room between its fast pacing and hardcore flourishes. Keen listeners will even pick out a few electronic elements scattered throughout the track, adding to what is already a sonically diverse track.

Follow Me Down is a catchy and inventive new track from Phoenix Day, proving that the band have a strong idea of the genre they’re playing in and how to differentiate themselves from other bands in their scene. An exciting next step for the band, and one that signposts good things to come from the Melbourne act’s future.
