Crushing!

After their amusing diversion with last year’s split EP of punk covers, Melbourne’s Orpheus Omega now set their controls for further experimenting with their melodic death metal sound.

Within These Walls is a track that builds from a gradual intro of pompish power-metal synths and then just keeps on building.

Orpheus Omega continue to stack on the layers of melody, heaviness and tension until it breaks with a searing and fluid guitar solo from special guest Andy Gillion. It packs a lot into such a short song, from melodic staccato riffing to a fist-pumping refrain with high, soaring vocals reminiscent of Soilwork, to a driving repetitive riff into whirling drums and darker, harsher singing.

Within These Walls delivers upon every word of that promise. With a stunning grasp of drama, tension, songwriting and arrangement, it is also a track that showcases the immense talent Orpheus Omega has at their command.

When it comes, Gillion’s short but sharp solo adds yet another dynamic, a bridge to even heavier territory on the other side. The band’s stated goal for this track was as an exploration of the frustration of futility. Within These Walls delivers upon every word of that promise. With a stunning grasp of drama, tension, songwriting and arrangement, it is also a track that showcases the immense talent Orpheus Omega has at their command.

STICK THIS NEXT TO: Soilwork, At the Gates, Insomnium
