An Unsuspecting Beauty

Exceptional and unexpected, the twists and turns not only in music but the at times too-close-to-home narratives make Ghost, the debut single from Melbourne outfit Lune, a very intense and potent offering.

Beatdowns, synths, rampaging rhythms, and guttural vocals, Lune have all the classic elements of your standard posthardcore outfit, only it’s the non-linear direction of their song structure and the asymmetrical melodies that make this track stand out from its contemporaries.

You feel the pain and anguish in every element of this song. A dichotomic ethereal voice takes over in the chorus, an unexpectedly angelic insertion into an otherwise devious track, one that is in keeping with the rest of the track because it sounds as if it’s at odds with itself.

Dark and dastardly as Ghost is, there is an innocuous beauty here.

No, really, this is about as brutal as brutal gets and yet that floating beauty manages to compliment all the craziness occurring beneath it. Nothing but darkness crashing forth, a darkness Lune have dubbed fear, one that eats away at the song’s protagonist, the marriage of these two elements creating dissonance and are at odds with one another’s existence.

Dark and dastardly as Ghost is, there is an innocuous beauty here. Lune are very good at creating a deep sense of imagery very quickly, painting a picture with sonic strokes so incredibly complex and diverse, it’s easy to find yourself pushing repeat to be caught up in it all over and over again.
