Citizens of Hell meet Idiot Dog Brain, the Melburnians bringing the party back to metal with their debut EP Uneasy Listening.

A mish-mash in every sense of the word, the six tracker takes the grooviness of late 90s metal and mixes it with polyrhythms and keyboard lines straight out of a Nightmare on Elm Street movie. It’s no real surprise then, that the five-piece has described the cacophony of sounds as “the musical equivalent of vomiting into a blender and drinking the results.“

Coming in at just under 30 minutes, Uneasy Listening packs a helluva lot in its run time.  Tracks like Uncle Satan and The Casualty Ward explode with sludgy, down-tuned riffs and vocals oscillating between mid-range barks and rhythmic spoken words. Harmonies more fiery than the pits of hell conceal nauseating lyricism (I Killed Your Bodyguard and Finding a Needle in a Nutsack are particularly juicy examples). It is bold; while some listeners will savour the intensity, others will find it too heavily flavoured.

It’s also not an EP you should take too seriously, but did you expect anything else from a band that’s self-described themselves as a bunch of morons who get horribly boozed up together and eventually vomit up some generally ridiculous music? 

Idiot Dog Brain’s debut is anything but easy listening. It’s a bunch of mad tunes played by five dudes with even madder stage personas—simple as that.
