If you’ve put your high school history classes in your brain’s trashcan, let us remind you of the myth of Icarus. He flew too close to the sun with wings made of wax and perished – metaphorically representing man’s overreaching of his limits.

This is not the case for Perth heavy-hitters, Icarus Lives. If anything, their attempts to push themselves on Scorched Reprise have brought them new life. In massive part, this can be attributed to the stunning falsetto of new frontwoman Aria Scarlett.

meshuggah hysteria

As goosebump-inducing as her vocals are on their own, they’re on a whole other level when paired with the bone-crushingly heavy riffs of Cameron Michael & Cohen Dennis, the punishing bass of Chris Ayling and the powerful melodies of drummer Naomi Treacy. In the space of the EP’s three tracks, the band have not only shown off their immense technical skill but their flair for the dramatic.

Icarus Lives have harnessed the power of heavy music and decimated all limits. And they’ve triumphed because of it.

And by blending metal, opera, rock and cinematic influences, they’ve thrown caution and genre norms to the wind. While opener Secret Keeper is our EP highlight, Icarus Lives win points for their take no prisoners approach and consistently nailing whatever sound they land on. Ultimately, they’ve harnessed the power of heavy music and decimated all limits. And they’ve triumphed because of it.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Secret Keeper, Linear, Decomposure
STICK THIS NEXT TO: Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Eyes Set To Kill
