The newest single from the Irish hip-hop/emo artist is an exploration of escaping a relationship that is ultimately toxic, despite the person being “sweet like candy.”
The song was produced by guccihighwaters with help from his friend Jay Vee and combines a haunting chord progression with a hip-hop drum pattern to create the smooth and relentlessly bouncy track. guccihighwaters explains that the song is intended to feel bittersweet and dives into how “Sometimes you have to end a relationship that feels so good but is bad for you and won’t end well.”
In addition to Jay Vee, Soundcloud artist Lund had a hand in the song’s creation by laying down a verse in the back half of the track. Candy opens with a chorus and verse from gucchighwaters which immediately sets the sombre yet comforting tone. Lund’s verse, coming in after the 1-minute mark, pushes the song along before it gets stale, and supplies a strong new-age hip-hop sound amongst guccihighwaters’ silky emo vibe.
After growing up in Ireland guccihighwaters moved to New York at the age of 15. It was these environments and his isolation which laid the foundations for the unique blend of emo and hip-hop sounds blended with honest and vulnerable lyrics.
Since entering the music scene in 2017 guccihighwaters (aka Morgan Murphy) has been a growing force in the industry. With nearly 850,000 monthly Spotify listens and close to 40,000 followers on Soundcloud, where he has released 52 songs, guccihighwaters will continue to be a young artist to keep a close eye on.
