Echoes In EternityInto the Negative

With a name derived from a quote by Marcus Aurelius, Echoes in Eternity unleash their second release in just over twelve months in the shape of Into the Negative, an album that marks a transformation for the Adelaide bruisers.

They’ve made no secret of their love of Fear Factory in the past, and opener Retaliate comes out of the gate with a hammering staccato riff Dino Cazares would be proud to call his own. 

While it’s definitely an inspiration for the band’s music, Echoes of Eternity are far more than mere slaves to such an influence, as they step away from their earlier melodeath aspirations, and lock into chugging riffs and slamming grooves. Reaper’s Release highlights a late 90s nu-metal sound that appears to be where the band is headed, albeit with the addition of some frantic soloing into the mix.

When they do hit the right spot, Echoes in Eternity show themselves to be a hard-hitting unit to watch out for.

Female vocals add a further dimension on Heavy Weights, providing a very marked contrast to Lee Gardiner’s raw and abrasive delivery and closing track Not Anymore unleashes true venom with a promise of more aggression to come. Into the Negative is solid punishment, but there are times where it feels like a band still coming together. Gardnier’s vocals tend to lack cadence with the music at times and some of the songs don’t quite have the strong hooks that make them memorable. When they do hit the right spot, Echoes in Eternity show themselves to be a hard-hitting unit to watch out for.
