Being a quick follow on record from their last album, Bad Habits, which was released in May 2018, the forthcoming Rival Minds is an offering that’s being awaited with great anticipation. Having released two singles already, Crawl the Night and Rust, we’ve been given a pretty good taste of what the album entails and it’s one that’s filled with thrashy melodies and bottomless growls that’ll energise punks with enough stamina to survive the mosh during Bare Bones’ next gig.

Filled with rollicking guitar riffs and heavy rhythms that ricochet the amplifiers

Opening with New Low, the staggered notes between guitarists Scott Daniels and James Dean spiral in intermittent solo’s that weave through the barrelling of James Clarke’s bass riffs, creating triumphant choruses that are heightened by the gradual peaks of each verse.

Charging into Hollow Bones with bass grooves that bounce through the opening melody with driving strums, drummer Chris Blancato’s sticks dance across the drum skins which lays the beat for vocalist Thomas Kennedy to roar into.

The evocative Gold Leaf spirals through kaleidoscopic guitar riffs that have Blancato pounding on the kit with the notion of a hot rod speeding down an empty highway as his technique peaks on the winding guitar notes that cut through Kennedy’s vocals before the track ends aptly with a cough, perhaps an ode to the suppression of missed breathes during his unrelenting lyrical animosity.

The staggered breakdowns charge through the album’s midsection, splitting the airwaves with the raucous energy through an Axe to Grind, into the thumping echoes of Drag Me Down Below before the five-piece deliver us to the melodic ambush that is Gravebound while a harrowing Crooked Eye turns us to one of the single’s, Rust.

The title track Rival Minds enters the first chorus with a shakily woven verse that segments into bouncy breakdowns and harmonious lyrical cries that hear Kennedy’s vocals diversifying within the song’s rigorous intervals.

Filled with rollicking guitar riffs and heavy rhythms that ricochet the amplifiers, Bare Bones’ forthcoming album, which will be released on 1st of November, has solidified that Sydney’s hardcore scene is alive and well.
