Following from the wildly successful 2016 release Kodama, Spiritual Instinct has a different vibe, moving away from nostalgic storytelling towards introspection and the Pandora’s box of turbulent emotion that this appears to be for Alcest’s primary composer Neige. The primal and celestial, the conflict, the resolution, the troubles, the hope … all manifest in the immersive experience of Spiritual Instinct.

Embracing the blackgaze form of longer complicated songs, Spiritual Instinct sweeps the listener up into a stormy journey in but six tracks, beginning with the epic opening piece Les Jardins De Minuit [which poetically translates to ‘The Gardens of Midnight’] and the relatively heavier and majestic desolation of Protection.

The emotional world conjured up in Spiritual Instinct is deep and sophisticated, and will appeal to fans of atmospheric black metal, as well as those who like to immerse in the sonic journeys of dark shoegaze.

While blackgaze isn’t normally known for thundering power and even hints of aggression, Alcest have woven this in with subtle magnitude. The mood then shifts, or rather the complexities intensify, towards the middle of the album with L’Île Des Morts, indeed a stunning exemplar of blackgaze. Undulating grimy riffs spar with sparkling melody and despite the intrinsically grim nature of the track, it is strangely empowering.  Followed by another musically impressive and conceptually rich track Le Miroir, Alcest flexes its tendencies towards grand-scale immersive atmospheres to depict the troubled spaces within ourselves.

Finishing with the title track Spiritual Instinct, the concept of the album is brought together, with primal rhythms underscoring, or perhaps undermining, soaring, ethereal vocals; a fitting representation of humankind’s constant duality between our instinctive passions, and our yearning for the philosophical and divine. In a genre that is highly prone to meandering and vagueness, Alcest has skilfully created a well-structured and meaningful musical experience.

Spiritual Instinct is Alcest’s most introspective and mature album to date. It is an intensification of Alcest are known to do well: complex, turbulent layers and hypnotic, otherworldly soundscapes that convey more than simply notes and cryptic lyrics. The emotional world conjured up in Spiritual Instinct is deep and sophisticated, and will appeal to fans of atmospheric black metal, as well as those who like to immerse in the sonic journeys of dark shoegaze.
