Dear Joey and Brooke, What a wild ride! I just wanted to write to express …
In a press release for their second EP, If Only You Could Feel Something Too, Melbourne alt-rockers Rumours said this offering was made to “promote individualism and self-expression”. And oh, how on the money they are!
MORE: VOID OF VISION: Something Old, Something New // CHASE ATLANTIC: Pensive Is As Pensive Does: “The Harder Life Is, The Better I Think Our Music Will Become.” REVIEWS: CHASE ATLANTIC: Beauty In Death // ROB ZOMBIE: The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy // VOID OF VISION: Hyperdaze (Redux) // ERRA: Erra
This EP, thematically, dances between tension and reflection, passion and self-loathing, sentiments of which are mirrored perfectly in the jubilant highs and catastrophic lows of the instrumental arrangements and the band’s delivery. Rumours are masters of generating excellent results from well-considered intention.
What an opener! Tasty little bends into the minor key through the EP’s title track only accentuate the psychosis of the vocals, while effects on all instrumentation at one point or another, and abrupt gear changes into different tempos, only go to secure your confidence that Rumours can maintain a cascade of anthemic bangers throughout the rest of the release.
If Only You Could Feel Something Too is not only an exciting way to experience bravery, figuratively, literally, and musically, but showcases an exciting future for the band.
Dynamic shifts in mood, as with single Neurosis, really uphold the band’s thematic intention. An opportunity to bare their vulnerable side, the gentle pick of guitars and more gentle vocal melody gives an accurate soundtrack to feelings of immense pain and frustration. It’s an interesting interjection in the middle of the release, a chance to absorb and contemplate all the well-delivered fury of the first half of the EP before the rollercoaster plummets down over the bend to conclude in a rush of glory. Though it’s been some years since they made their debut, the slowly but surely approach has paid off for Rumours. If Only You Could Feel Something Too is not only an exciting way to experience bravery, figuratively, literally, and musically, but showcases an exciting future for the band, one which it is guaranteed you’ll be paying attention to after your first spin of this absolute treasure.
