PREMIERE: SNUB // The Virus

After dropping their debut single just last month, Melbourne’s Snub has returned with another frenzied cut.

This time it’s The Virus, and true to its name, it’s pretty damn infectious.

We caught up with the band’s guitarists/vocalists Chris and Lisa, who gave us some insight into their history, how the track came together and more.

Hysteria: What’s the Snub story?

Chris: We’re a pretty new band. A new, old band, actually.

Lisa: We started during lockdown.

Chris: We wrote our first songs in February/March 2020, and then things slowed down a lot, obviously.

Lisa: We’ve been together for a bit, but not much has happened for a bit. A lot of bands didn’t make it through lockdown, though. It was pretty sad to hear so many breakups. I was lucky, though. I was in a band with Amanda (bass) and Jemima (drums) before we started Snub. I’d known them for a few years and knew they’d be keen to start something new.

Run us through what inspired your new tune, The Virus.

Lisa: This song was a pre-pandemic one. I’ve had it for a few years before Snub was even a band. It’s been good to get it out. It’s not really about anything in particular. The idea just popped up in my head. I like to keep things open-ended, and people can take from it what they want. I don’t pick topics, things will just pop into my head, and I’ll go with them. I had the guitar riff for a while, and I started making up some lyrics on the spot. Then I brought it to the band. Chris started the rhythm and got it going!

We love the music video and its creepy vibes. It must’ve been such a blast putting it together.

Chris: It was a lot of fun. Our original idea was to make it dark and hazy. The track is noisy and atmospheric, so it worked.

Lisa: Yeah, so we started decorating the room and then thought, what about if we had the band in the photo frames. I’m glad Chris is a computer whiz because he started working everything out and putting it together (laughs).

Chris: As it started coming together, It was more gothic than we’d first intended. We weren’t mad about it, though.

Lisa: I went a bit heavy with the fog machine too. I got excited (laughs).

Chris: We’ve been slowly collecting filmmaking gear intending to make our own videos. This is the second one we’ve done.

Why is being DIY so important for you?

Chris: We have a lot of ideas when it comes to videos and everything like that. I have dabbled in a lot of creative areas like video and animation. And to be fair, I’m a bit of a control freak (laughs), so it’s nice to have complete control and the ability to do precisely what you want. Lisa is a huge ideas person too. She comes up with them, and I make them happen!

Lisa: Yeah, I like that we get complete control and get to say what we want.

Chris: I’ve played in a lot of punk bands over the years, and it’s always been about that DIY attitude.

Build your dream tour. Who are you sharing the stage with?

Lisa: We’d love to get to a festival with other Australian bands!

Chris: A lot of the bands that influence us aren’t alive anymore. That makes things tricky! It’d be that whole 90s grunge kind of sound, though.

What’s next?

Chris: We started working on the fully animated music video for our third single during lockdown. That’ll come out in the next couple of months. Then we just want to gig as much as possible. We want to get out there as much as possible and play both locally and interstate.

Lisa: It still seems a bit weird with shows, so I’m hoping it kicks off soon. We just want to play heaps. We’ve only had a couple of shows. We do have one coming up soon with Something Something Explosion. That’ll be awesome.

Chris: We’ve got four songs recorded overall.

Lisa: We’d love to tour interstate at some point this year too.
