A festival fixture and renowned for his sultry electronica, Aussie producer and artist Paces has pivoted into hyperpop-punk territory, with a brand new single Brain Got Hands gleefully exploring emo and punk with sharp intimacy.

Hailing from the Gold Coast and well-established via his own solo work, Paces, aka Mikey Perry, has also extended his musical magic alongside the likes of Tkay Maidza, Safia as well as a memorable turn for triple j’s like a version with Guy Sebastian for a cover of LDRU’s Keeping Score.

But where his previous work dabbled largely in upbeat pop and club universes, 2023 has continued to signpost a significant shift and/or rebirth in the Paces creative journey. Following the turbulent few years of change and uncertainty that plagued the globe, Paces recently stepped behind the mic for the very first time for previous singles Adrift and Butterflies, delving into searingly personal narratives that ultimately reflecting an authentic catharsis alongside a significant musical shift. And this journey continues with gusto via Brain Got Hands, effortlessly fusing modern production with oscillating textures, simmering fuzz and a pop punk energy worthy of a living room mosh.

Alongside driving beats, fiery guitars and crunchy power chords, Brain Got Hands also urgently captures attention with Paces’ emphatic vocal delivery; a powerful and vulnerable display that parts the curtain deeply into Paces’ own journey that led to this new musical chapter. “Brain Got Hands is a snapshot of how I was feeling when my depression was at its worst,” Paces revealed in his recent press material. “It was a pretty hopeless time and despite doing everything to manage my mental health I just kept slipping further under.”

Accompanying the latest single, Paces has also confirmed a brand new album is on the way this year, with his third studio LP Three Summers set to be the first to fully embrace the brand new Paces sonic direction. While new waters stylistically, Three Summers will undoubtedly still feature plenty of the Paces DNA fans have already come to expect, namely plenty of buoyancy and vivid sincerity. But with Paces continuing to showcase his vocals, songwriting and firm ability to turn emotional coal into diamonds, Three Summers is definitely set to be something pretty special for new and old fans alike.
