Horror_Ethereal unleashes a hailstorm of dark synths, clattering, scatter-shot riffs and jackhammer drumming before a crushing onslaught of beats and vocal pandemonium.

It’s a grim scene setter for the nightmarish journey that follows as Mélancolia unfurl the tale of a tortured soul. While a track like Dread Will Follow plays more to deathcore tropes, the band is at its best when they explore the nuances of their confluence of styles. God Tongue and When Shovels Drag on Concrete stand out as Mélancolia bring together passages of creeping, Gothic atmosphere and howling, Dani Filth-like piercing screams against a miasma of ferocious riffs, demonic growls and blastbeasts, until the lightless melodies, abyssal synths and tremolo picking come to the fore of the assault.

Transcending genre is something that can take many bands many years and several albums to achieve. With the startling vision that is HissThroughRottenTeeth, Melancolia have made a solid attempt on only their first album.  

The longer the album runs, the further from deathcore it gets, spiralling further into nether pits of darkness and emotional turmoil. [inure] is the full flowering of Melancolia’s darkly Gothic industrial black metal pretensions, by turns a crawling, haunting and then stomping monstrocity, segueing into the title track that is darker and more forbidding still. Transcending genre is something that can take many bands many years and several albums to achieve.
