Considering their small tenure as a band, FANGZ have been making some major waves in the punk scene.

Securing festival slots alongside Trophy Eyes and making a name for themselves as the support act for the likes of Cancer Bats and Comeback Kid, there’s no doubt that FANGZ are in line to claim their spot as the frontrunners of the Aussie punk community.

Here’s why: As shown on Self Medicate, FANGZ are still quite hard to fit into a box. With their earlier works containing more of a hard hitting Every Time I Die feel through the use of breakdowns and screams thrown in, Self Medicate comes across much less chaotic. Not that it’s a slow ballad, if anything it’s as frantic as ever with the abrasive highly tuned guitars providing the perfect punch for Josh Cottreau’s vocals.

Self Medicate will undoubtedly become the most anthemic moment in the setlist for the upcoming tour.

Cottreau himself also slightly changes his style, with his soaring highs more akin to Royal Blood’s Mike Kerr, with his catchy hooks absolutely dominating the catchy chorus. So catchy in fact that I can see Self Medicate transcending the realms of punk/heavy music and finding some attention in AFL highlight reels, much like Ocean Grove have. Tackling themes of addiction, a topic that has resurfaced for many during lockdowns; Self Medicate will undoubtedly become the most anthemic moment in the setlist for the upcoming tour.
