One of the founding fathers of European thrash and a pillar of the scene since forever, Destruction have also always been a fearsome live act.

Without the ability to show off their crushing intensity on a real stage at the moment, the German legends have provided the world with the next best thing – a raging live album recorded during the festival season last year.

Unplanned, raw and without any studio gimmickry, Born to Thrash is almost an hour of one of the best in the business ripping through a killer set. There are no pretensions to anything but pure, heavy and aggressive thrash metal. Schmier sounds positively deranged right from the first time he unleashes his roar in Curse the Gods and the new double guitar line-up raises the savagery factor in a band already renowned for dealing out plenty of punishment.

Thrash the way it should be – live and dangerous.

Destruction are relentless here, and this recording shows them off warts and all, a presence so engaging that even without visuals a track like the hefty Life Without Sense seems to roar by in half the time it takes for them to play it. Schmier goads and exhorts the crowd in his native tongue, which is a surprise to hear at first but lends an air of true authenticity to the proceedings, and the sheer rawness of the performance puts it a few cuts above other live recordings.

Live albums are problematic beasts, often beset with bad sound or track listings and too many edits. Born to Thrash is found footage of a wild animal attack. Thrash the way it should be – live and dangerous.
