Pop at its Rawest!

Pop punk may have been the bee’s knees in the early 00’s thanks to Blink 182 and others who followed suit but its status has wavered in this decade and no longer feels as vital in the zeitgeist as it once did.

Contemporary outfit Charly Bliss are pushing the punk rock envelope in a glitzier pop direction and unlike most pop punk bands they bring their New York roots into their sonic vocabulary playing distorted guitars, washed up synths and singing catchy melodies reminiscent of the bands who brought the garage rock and post-punk movements into existence.

This digestible art pop collage of an album works in the band’s favour, it’s not important to classify Young Enough as one genre, it’s a collection of songs that take a life of their own …

Charly Bliss new offering Young Enough is the follow up LP to their debut Guppy and the progression is very noticeable especially on songs like Capacity that would work well in a DJ’s playlist at a club or as background music at your favourite clothing store. Eva Hendricks sings each song with the right nuance and attitude making the album a palatable listen. There are songs like Chatroom that delve into Hendrick’s personal trauma of sexual assault yet the melody and sound is optimistic and bubbly, in a way proving that she came through a dark time in her life and is now happy and well.

This digestible art pop collage of an album works in the band’s favour, it’s not important to classify Young Enough as one genre, it’s a collection of songs that take a life of their own and the point of pop is to give listeners pleasure and to provide an escape. On this premise Charly Bliss has achieved their objective and if ordinary pop music offends you then it’s not worth giving this album your time but for those who are curious about mixing an unlikely music pairing it definitely is a triumph of mastering the art of pop songwriting.
