It’s hard to believe that these punk rockers have been a band since 1994 and that this is only their second album. But second album it is, and it’s a damn good offering.

The five-piece band from Brisbane don’t waste any time showing off their punk rock roots and wearing their influences clearly on their sleeves, they have penned an album that is a tribute to the melancholy memories of the days gone by, when they were growing up on Jackson Street together and the adventures they had there.

Kicking off with Lost Boys, the band reminisces about these past moments with an energetic opener that is catchy and full of pumping riffs. It is fast-paced, keeping in line with the next few tracks, which really show off the raw energy the band have been known for over the years.

The Black Catapult have nailed the nineties punk rock vibe with Jackson Street. It’s an album that is full of bangers with plenty of melody, some great punk riffs and catchy, anthemic sing-a-longs that will make you get up and get moving.

As the album progresses, they slow down a bit as they approach the core and Kool Aid provides some slower moments before they move into We Were Young, a banger that looks back at their formative years playing punk shows and how they shaped the band they are today.

There is such a nostalgic vibe to this whole album, from the nineties Californian style punk that hits you hard and fast, to the slower ballads about lost loves, family members passing and missed opportunities.

And one of the standout tracks on this album, Falling Into Sleep, is one of these ballad style songs. Featuring talented guest vocals by local lass Jess Hutton, this is a gorgeous track, dedicated to a Grandparent and their passing. It’s typical of a punk rock ballad, the ones that start slow before launching into a riff-heavy, raw, emotionally charged finish. It’s also one of the sweeter moments on the record, showing off the sensitive side of the band among the jokes and banter in the other tracks.
