The track, which premiered on triple j’s Good Nights, presents Super Cruel’s attempts at a refreshing mixture of electronic and metal music, something which Super Cruel’s Jesse Porsches was aiming for.
“We wanted to do something that was different and unique to what’s out there at the moment,” Jesse Porsches says. “21 Devils feels super nostalgic and reminiscent of the OG bands we grew up listening to.”
Along with a lyric video which highlights the themes of excess present throughout the song, it presents both Super Cruel’s production prowess and Ocean Grove’s musicality while marrying them into clips that are presented to viewers via a literal window.
“It was amazing to work with Ocean Grove as they are one of Australia’s most cutting edge acts,” Super Cruel’s Tigerilla says. “Creatively we found our common goal and it was such a fun and inspired process.”
Super Cruel’s 2017 debut single November feat. Lisa Mitchell gained them notoriety after amassing over three million global streams, while recently they’ve shared remixes of Major Lazer’s Know No Better and Charlie XCX’s 1999.
Meanwhile Ocean Grove are set to embark on their Ask For The Anthem Tour in May, in support of their more pop centric single release Ask For The Anthem.
“This is exactly the kind of stuff we imagined ourselves doing at some point as Ocean Grove,” vocalist Dale Tanner says. “There’s an electronic undercurrent to a lot of our music so we were all over it when DR. SUPER CRUEL got in touch.”
