More often than not, if a band is releasing their first music in over 20 years, you can almost guess how it’s going to sound.

Normally, groups will present a reprise of their earlier material, rehashing over the same formulas that won over crowds for them in their hayday and repackaging them for new audiences. So when it was announced that Gold Coast based nü metal icons Sunk Loto were releasing new music, many immediately expected it to be inline with the groups industrially tinged nü metal output of the early noughties.

What no one seemed to expect was that the group’s newest single The Gallows Wait would dive head first into the djent based realms of metalcore to deliver what’s without a doubt the most ferocious and expansive sound Sunk Loto have released to date. The Gallows Wait doesn’t just feel like a revamp of Sunk Loto, it feels like a completely new band. A new band that would easily make it big amongst the modern day metal scene.

It’s the perfect blend of old and new, delivered in a style that’ll easily appease both first time listeners and die-hard fanatics alike.

From it’s djent based riffs to it’s sheer drop-off breakdowns all the way to it’s anthemic clean vocal chorus, The Gallows Wait manages to incorporate all of the elements that metalcore enthusiasts flock towards, but yet it’s done in a completely original style. Sure, certain riffs and vocal cadences feel slightly in line with the likes of Polaris, While She Sleeps and Architects, but overall, The Gallows Wait only dabbles into elements of these influences before mixing them with early 2000’s post-hardcore elements clean choruses. It’s the perfect blend of old and new, delivered in a style that’ll easily appease both first time listeners and die-hard fanatics alike.
