SINK THE SHIP // Perseverance Is Key

Music can mean so much. We’ve all turned to music to get us through a lot of things, good and bad. We all have that one album that lifts our spirits in hard times, or one that stirs up a sense of elation through the good—and with Sink The Ship’s new album, Persevere, there will soon be another release that you’ll want to add to your arsenal of relatable tunes.

Their first release with SharpTone Records, Persevere is a pretty apt title to wrap around the songs contained within. A unique styling of punching punk topped with energetic easycore and an infusion of heaviness, the album speaks volumes over many personal areas for the band. Though their name seems pretty morose, the only thing Sink The Ship are bringing down are lids on boxes of negative connotations and experiences. For vocalist Colton Ulery, playing music is at the very core of his being and has given him, on more than one occasion, a voice where he may not otherwise have had one. “I would say that music is my primary outlet to release bad energy,” he says. “It’s the only way I’ve been able to cope with any issues I’ve had.”

“As long as I’m unhappy then you guys will keep getting songs that sound the shit!”

Well that’s a pretty strange statement. Going through negative motions and problematic feelings may be where Ulery is at now in terms of how he produces music, but as Sink The Ship move forward, gaining more recognition, he’s adamant that their outlook will improve even if there’s no compromise on their mantra—for the music to be there for the fans when nothing else is. “I think the content will always serve the same purpose,” he says. “I’m sure that life will get better for me but at the end of the day, life sucks, I think everybody knows that. I think it’s more relatable to write about those kinds of things because even if life improves for me, doesn’t mean it will for the rest of the world.

“I like to think we’re giving people their own outlet by hearing our songs, like, ‘This guy has a fucked life too, I’m not the only one.’ I think the content will stay pretty relevant to that, and if it doesn’t, I’m not really sure what I’d write about because like I said, this is my only way of like, making sure that that’s all out there, by doing it through music. I couldn’t see myself playing any other kind of music than what we do.”

This album, this band, is more than a passion project for Ulery, it’s his escape, his life, his love. When Persevere drops, Sink The Ship’s schedule looks to be like it’ll be the greatest distraction, the greatest mission, and a source of massive joy for Ulery. “So far a lot of things have been moving pretty fast since we got with all of the guys over at the label. After the release we have more videos to put out. We did six videos for this album which is a lot and have three more to do post-album, so that will keep everything flowing. Then we have a couple of tours happening, then after all that slows down at the end of the year, I think we’re gonna start working on the next album.”

Ulery is in a place now where if left to do his thing, he couldn’t care about any negative reception to what Sink The Ship are out to achieve so long as he gets to even just a few people. For listeners who have heard the singles Second Chances and Domestic Dispute, they’ve had nothing but love for this sound. “Obviously you’ll never please everybody,” says Ulery, “And we knew that going into it. ‘You guys sound like this band or that band,’ and we’re like ‘Hey man, fuck you, whatever!’

“I think the reception has been great, it’s definitely more than we expected. Before this we weren’t a well-known band so for me, the numbers on Youtube and like all those outlets, once we know people are hearing it, it feels great. Everything is so great.”
