Filled with unrelenting energies and exorbitant melodies, Private Function have fuelled this album with more Australiana than an empty slab of VB tinnies ever could.

Don’t be fooled by the album’s cover either; it might look like these Melbourne-based ratbags are gonna hold a private function for a Metallica tribute, but once the first track kicks off; you’ll hear within the opening chords that this is, in fact, a punk band who are worthy of turning those iconic fists into a thumb’s up.

The albums opener, White Lady Funerals, will have you wondering if the national company could offer the ceremony that you’ve been looking for, as the bellowing chants of “wa-oh-ah” sound loud enough to awaken the Reaper himself within the guitar’s sharp riffs, just in time for the lyrical barracking of vocalist Chris Penney who’ll demand that you Shut Up And Give The Man Your Bank Details.

Filled with unrelenting energies and exorbitant melodies, Private Function have fuelled this album with more Australiana than an empty slab of VB tinnies ever could.

Reminiscing an early-AFI-esque tone as guitarists Joey Hanson and Peter Russo’s strumming weaves into the hammering of drummer Aidan McDonald’s beats, Penney’s fevered lyrics endorse vocal backup’s through every day that he’s been Talking To Himself. The castigating choruses within My Bully Is Dead will have you sending good riddance to those who did wrong through distorted verses and an un-restraining rhythm.

Once we’re introduced to Marco Chan with a squealing introduction, McDonald’s swift drum patterns meet Joe Menell’s bass nimble with thunderous effects, creating a charging melody that leads us towards Assassinate (and TINPOTS). With an upheaval of fury and chanting—that’ll leave bruising after their next gig—comes the encouragement to “help me assassinate the Prime Minister.” With more cowbell than ever before, it’d be hard not to adhere to the unrelenting beats within the chaos that this one and a half minute track creates.

Throughout the 13 tracks, Private Function unravels a distinctive home-grown punk authenticity through their melodies that amplify their DIY attitudes with boasting energy, animosity and an in-your-face reminder that PF are still on top.
