Dear Joey and Brooke, What a wild ride! I just wanted to write to express …

Says guitarist Drew McDonald, the inspiration for Odium largely comes from the mind of the band’s vocalist, Josh Badcock. “The word ‘odium’ means hate incurred by someone as a result of their actions”, explains McDonald. “It was kind of [meant as] an after effect of how someone can feel within the world around us.
With cinematography duties executed by Benjamin Powell, Alda Sky rampage through metalcore melodies of the most extreme, hard-hitting riffs distinctive to the band. All of this is captured in the open air, the darkness of their surroundings encompassing the darkness they are trying to relay from within The video also sees frontman Josh trapped in the boot of a car, symbolising, McDonald says, how a person might feel trapped by the world around them. “Sometimes overcoming all that sort of stuff can set you free,” he says.
A lot of metaphor magic happening in this track, with a lot of twists and turns. At the four minute mark, McDonald’s brother, Jake McDonald, on backing vocals and guitar, adds an unexpected twist when he breaks into a beautiful melody that really helps shape the narrative of the song, audibly and visually. “We all think Jake is a massive asset to the band,” says McDonald. “His vocal abilities can really set a scene and draw people in.
[If] we keep building on the sounds that we’re after we seem to get the best groove going …

“To be able to have him project in that way and get that expression out there, it’s really cool.”
Releasing their debut EP, Reflections, in 2017 (from which Odium is taken), Alda Sky gained a lot of attention. The release charted at number two on the iTunes Metal Album Charts, was voted as the Best SA Heavy Release on Radio Adelaide, and various tracks from the EP were given radio time on stations across the country, including Triple J.
With the release of the video for Odium, it’s a massive representation of where Alda Sky are at now and where they see themselves going. “It’s definitely a benchmark for the band and what we feel like we’re capable of writing,” says McDonald. “[If] we keep building on the sounds that we’re after we seem to get the best groove going–and crowd reactions are good, as well.
“We’re trying to write similar songs along these lines in future but it’s gonna be a touch different as well.”
With addition of drummer Ben Maule to the band, McDonald says Alda Sky will maintain some of the stylings of Reflections but with some subtle changes. Two drummers, two vocalists, two guitarists … throw another bass player in there and it’s a double-whammy across the board. Laughing, McDonald says, “There is a fair bit happening!”
