On Survivors Guilt: The Mixtape, the Wisconsin based wunderkind has partnered with the godfather of the scene, Travis Barker, and the results are nothing short of incredible.
Rather than relying too heavily on saccharine stereotypes, the mixtape embraces the edgier, angst soaked side of the early 2000s with darker riffs and sprinklings of screaming. It kicks off with Silence Is Also An Answer//, a high tempo, melodic shockwave of sound. The track is a real standout, as are Inside Of Heavens Mouth There Is A Sweet Tooth// and Hollywood Sucks//. But Survivors Guilt deserves a round of applause for having a grand total of zero low points – and for having so many killer Barker moments.

Kenny’s last release, how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway?, confidently strolled down multiple musical pathways, paying tribute to the likes of Bloc Party, Kid Cudi and Blink 182. This spirit of this remains in Survivors Guilt, albeit in a more pared-back manner. A blistering blend of rap and punk is on offer, particularly in Estella. Lyrics like ‘i hate myself enough for the both of us’ will also have 10/10 emos singing their lungs out.
Survivors Guilt packs a helluva lot in its 20 minute run time. It’s nostalgic enough to take you back to the halls of your high school but unique enough to move the scene into a new era (come on, there’s even a reference to Kenny NOT leaving his town).
KennyHoopla has given an old favourite sound a whole new lease on life. With him leading the new wave, it’s safe to say the scene will be in good hands.
