#THISWEEK // Our Top Ten Stories — 24 November 2017

It’s Black Friday! Paint the devil on the wall! Dave Mustaine was right; the devil is evil, and the root of all evil is money. If you want to get biblical on our asses, sure. I picked up Spiderbait’s Ivy and the Big Apples on vinyl for a “discount” – though behavioural economics would say otherwise. There’s no such thing as a discount, there’s just a price. A price doesn’t exist in a continuum, it exists in a “spot”. It is whatever it is at that given moment (hence “spot pricing” for commodities.) It’s like those movies where a hero refuses to buy something that’s crucial to his success, and later the price goes way up. It’s still the same item, but demand is higher. The merchant knows that, so he charges as much as he likes. It’s a concept called price anchoring – to give the illusion of a great deal when in fact, there is none. The free market is a wonderful system, even if one of our contributing editors Hersey thinks it’s the actual devil. Go back to Russia, Hersey! Anyway, here’s our Top Ten:
