A Very Slow Burner

Melbourne outfit Slowly Slowly have been hard at work recording and touring whilst getting some airplay on Triple J and creating a buzz within the national music scene.

The quartet has just signed with UNFD and will be releasing a brand new second album titled St. Leonards through the label. The title refers to St. Leonard beach in Victoria, a family cornerstone for singer and lyricist Ben Stewart who explores a variety of topics on the album from his personal life of living a mundane existence in the city to relationships with family, friends and lovers.

The sonic style alongside the melancholic singing unfortunately gets a little tedious and you wish the album pushed forward into something different

Slowly Slowly’s role seems to be that of supporting Stewart’s melodic voice, taking a backseat in order to serve the storytelling. At times it feels like a singer songwriter album with some complementary moments of hard rock in between the reflective lyrics and somber singing. The bright guitar tones re-create a mood of bored teenage life during summer and walking around the suburbs without any care in the world. The sonic style alongside the melancholic singing unfortunately gets a little tedious and you wish the album pushed forward into something different but it never really does.

St. Leonards was produced and mixed by bassist Alex Quayle and Stewart as well as additional assistance with drum recording from Joel Taylor at The Black Lodge Studio. Unfortunately this album falls flat especially towards the end and whilst it’s great to see the band getting radio play and signing to UNFD, the music of Slowly Slowly doesn’t make you want to rush off and explore more of their work.
