Grunge soaked emo revivalists

The ‘emo revival’ has sweltered with an undying stamina and dynamism over the last six years. Forebearers of the movement, like Citizen and Title Fight have taken the genre to ultra-melodic new heights delving into grunge-soaked territory that amplifies a permeating melancholy.

Movements strike the perfect balance between paying homage to the establishing sound of legendary emo Godfather’s, Sunny Day Real Estate and honing in on every recent trend and subtlety embedded within the scene. Feel Something is a culmination of moody, gut-wrenching guitar tones that trudge beneath yearning vocal melodies, providing perfectly miserable ground for genre faithfuls to revel in.

Cinematic opener Full Circle is a bass-driven lesson in grieving, underscored by subtle acoustic guitar inflections that pivot the song in a grand, and undeniably anthemic direction. The album follows suit in stacking hooks on top of pure angst, showcased prominently on Colorblind—a surefire scene classic in the making. Deadly Dull’s solemn recurring riff cornerstones the song’s jittery drumming, propelling us into a universe of dizzying sadness.

Under The Gun injects grimy bass tones with a harsher vocal performance that allows energy to reverberate through vulnerabilities—a true testament to Movements’ highly developed understanding of structure. Fever Dream, unfortunately, slows the album’s momentum, playing towards its softer side—it’s 2017, why do we still push for the token acoustic track? Closer, The Grey’s is a swelling conglomerate of slow building chord patterns and painstakingly beautiful realisations, manifested in a bittersweet cacophony of melody and noise.

Relentlessly sad and whole-heartedly angsty, Full Circle is immense in showcasing the soaring capacities of melody-driven yet aggressive emo—a style well embraced, but still largely misunderstood. It’ll be interesting to see where the next crop of emo revivalists decide to take the ever-blooming sound—however, if Full Circle eventually yields the influence it’s greatness is pointing towards, we’ll be in safe hands.
