Vicious is the latest album to drop from heavy rock four-piece Halestorm. In what was self-described as a difficult album to write after the success of their third studio album in 2015, the album is fast and heavy with drops that are reminiscent of the band’s early releases.

It’s exactly the sort of thing your hungover brain needs. Track by track, it’s a no bullshit album that attacks the roots of self-doubt, and really delivers as a cathartic and personal journey.

From an album that was completely re-written midway through its creation, the production of this album is a hell of a kick up from their previous work, and the band points to Foo Fighters producer Nick Raskulinecz as the main culprit for change.

Track by track, it’s a no bullshit album that attacks the roots of self-doubt, and really delivers as a cathartic and personal journey.

According to frontwoman, Lizzy Hale “He pushed us mentally and physically. There are some things on this record that I didn’t think were physically possible for both myself and my bandmates. It was really exciting to see that happen for the first time in the studio. To be able to still surprise each other like that–and to surprise yourself–is no small feat.” The sophistication and maturity of the band really shines through in this album, and it truly proves Halestorm to be timeless in their ability to make damn good music.

With tracks like, Heart of Novocaine Halestorm unearth a deeper level of vulnerability and honesty, that fans previously only got a glimpse of during live performances. Halestorm really took a risk with the variations of vocal range and the delicate dance between rock genres in this album, but it goes to show after a decade of prominence they happen to know a thing or two about their audience.
