Ceres are known all too well for their gloomy lyrics and reflective moody songs as evident on their debut album Drag It Down on You.

The pop-rock Melbourne quartet are back with a brand new release titled We Are a Team aiming to achieve the opposite effect to their predecessor, writing songs to uplift the listener and to spread a sense of overall optimism. The reason for such a positive album comes down to singer Tom Lanyon who was determined to move on after writing the break up song Stretch Ur Skin which became a successful hit single for the band. The album cover also depicts the cutting of a noose like rope implying it’s time to leave the past behind and move on in a more hopeful way.

We Are a Team is a solid addition to the band’s canon and is worth investing your time in.

The overriding theme of We Are a Team is love and on the opening song Marriage Tom sings “I’m gonna get happy” which nicely sums up the entire album. Aside from the band’s thematic shift, this a well-produced album and demonstrates a path of maturity from the execution of the songs to the addition of strings on the album’s final song Something Good. The album’s single Me & You follows the outfit’s tradition of producing indie rock anthems and will more than likely go down well in their live shows. For those devotees who have followed Ceres since their inception this is an evolution they can definitely get behind and for people who are new to their music, it’s worth appreciating the balance between writing intricate rock riffs with pop songwriting sensibilities that showcase emotional depth. We Are a Team is a solid addition to the band’s canon and is worth investing your time in.
