Affinity Minus Perfection // Past, Present & Future

There’s nothing more rock ‘n’ roll than musicians who build themselves from the ground up to share in the passion and enjoyment of going to shows and listening to good music. Well that’s how you can describe North Queensland five-piece metalcore outfit, Affinity Minus Perfection, who have just released their latest EP Passion Through Unity.

Their second EP and new addition to their discography, Passion Through Unity is a record that flows from one track to the next, with enough variety to keep you interested until the end of the last song. Ahead of the release, Affinity Minus Perfection guitarist Matt Huxley gave us an insight into the EP, the recording process with ex-The Amity Affliction’s Troy Brady and what the band has planned next.

“[We] wanted to convey a reflection on where we come from, where we are now and where we want to be; a past, present, future sort of thing. And about pursuing what we want to do without the fear of failing and finding other people around you who are as passionate and are as driven as you are, no matter what it is in your life. Finding your passion and really driving towards it—that’s the overall arc.”

After self producing their first EP Interpret As You Will, having an Australian music legend like Troy Brady producing this latest release was not only a huge learning experience, but pretty damn cool as well.

“[It was] completely crazy. We walked in and there’s Troy from Amity, someone we listened to in high school. Working with him, he broke everything down into ‘this is what you got to do, this is what we gotta focus on’. He helped us change and improve in so many ways that the original EP just developed into something that was better.”

Given the sheer volume of bands that are coming in and out of the Australian music scene, something that sets this group apart is not only their dedication to creating great music for themselves and fans, but the community building focus that is still often missing in various scenes around the country. They know what it’s like to be a fan, to be someone looking for shows and wanting to experience exciting live music, but maybe not having access simply because of where you live.

“We grew up in a small town, we didn’t have connections or anything so we just did it all ourselves. We were looking for shows and then when no one was putting them on anymore, we said lets just do it ourselves!”

“We’re just trying to create a little community here [Rockhampton] for heavy music. There was one at one time, and then it kinda disappeared and no one was going to shows as much—so we’re trying to build it back up again.”

Not just here to talk the talk, Affinity Minus Perfection want to back up their ideas of a far-reaching heavy music community with a tour.

“What we’re shooting for at the moment, we want to do a big East Coast tour. All over Australia and playing everywhere in between—we’ll play anywhere that will have us, not just the capital cities. [Previously] we would hit up a lot of bands that only play in capital cities and we’re just confused, like why? You’re in a band to play music, why not do it as much as possible in as many places as possible!”

Although relatively new to the Australian music scene, Affinity Minus Perfection have elevated themselves to the forefront of people’s minds for more than just being able to smash out a breakdown and belt out a ballad-style chorus. These five Aussie blokes from a small town out west of Rockhampton are working to create and expand the music community, trying to eliminate other small towns missing out on shows and embodying the DIY attitude that rock ‘n’ roll was built on—handing out CDs at gigs and all.
