Two years since their debut EP was released, Affinity Minus Perfection have a new addition to their catchy Metalcore repertoire and it’s definitely worth the wait. Passion Through Unity takes the raw core elements of AMP’s first EP and elevates it to a new level with refined instrumental and lyrical honesty.

Taking you on a journey of past, present and future, Passion Through Unity is an inside look at the growth of Affinity Minus Perfection as a band, their aspirations for the future, and the overall message to find your passions and drive yourself forward towards them. 

After being treated to the EP single Intention Subversion, we had high expectations for the rest of the record. When the opening track Speechless begins, we were fairly confident that we had nothing to worry about. The track was engaging from the first second, with plenty of head-banging opportunities and a catchy chorus to keep me interested. 

As the third track on the EP after Intention Subversion, the slow build of Voices In Volumes is a nice change of pace for the mid-way point of the record. With a variety of different guitar riffs, slower tempo vocals—both clean and unclean—and a powerful chorus, it’s easy to lose yourself in the near hypnotic rhythm. 

The lyrics are raw, the instrumental addictive and the overall message is one so important to every kind of person.

Faithfully Detached is a track that hits you right in the feels. The spoken intro “so you wanna [sic] play with the big boys”, being addressed as “kid” and the taunting tone of the verses adds a layer of honesty about intimidation and even fear, that isn’t often portrayed so openly. It’s when you’re met with a chorus of “this is all we’ve ever wanted, right here, right now” that you’re reminded of just how humble the Affinity Minus Perfection guys are and how they live by their message to pursue your passions in life. This is the song that unites all the others on the record; the one that you hear in passing, but stop to listen. 

Rounding out the release with From Beginning, To Now as the final track, the song feels like a finale. The slow build up to what you know is going to be a good breakdown, the energy put into each lyric or note and the sing-along invoking chorus—If the aim was to complete the record with a song that everyone would belt out alongside, I’d say they hit the mark. 

The hard work and dedication that these four Central QLD guys have put into Affinity Minus Perfection seems to be paying off. The lyrics are raw, the instrumental addictive and the overall message is one so important to every kind of person. We’re calling it now, with the attitude they’ve got and the music they’re releasing, Affinity Minus Perfection will be going places.
