Dear Joey and Brooke, What a wild ride! I just wanted to write to express …
Tackling the infamous cultural phenomenon of the 27 club alongside a cacophony of sharpened thrash and metal, Melbourne’s Vault Hill return in torrential fashion with their brand new single “27.1”.

A hulking blend of frenzied riffs, cascading drumwork, and scathing vocals, “27.1” is a caustic yet fresh-faced outing from the Melbourne quartet, equally flexing the group’s appetite for heavy thrash laced with harmonic wizardry, pounding breakdowns, and the ability to also capture tragic themes with gripping execution.
“The concept of this track was to write lyrics that honour those who have fallen and joined the infamous 27 club,” shares the band of their latest release. “When I first started writing these lyrics, I really struggled as I had not lived their life of intense fame and notoriety so found it to be a very difficult undertaking. I wanted to tell their story and tragic evolution of what intense stardom does to the individual, how they become and live like gods but it becomes all consuming and the fire blazes out so to speak in their fatal loss of life, often by drug overdose or abuse.
“I had not lived this life and it was incredibly difficult to try and tell this story and how would I be able to get the audience to identify that it’s about them without directly saying so? It was my best friend that asked me why don’t you just use quotes or lyrics? It was a brilliant idea and the verses are fully constructed of their words (with some minor alterations) the chorus depict a the tragic evolution of their rise and fall and the breakdown is about the take over of fame to death, something indescribable picking you up and taking you away, something you cannot control or foresee.”
Named for the ancestral burial vault of original members (and brothers) Adrian O’Brien and Morgan O’Brien, Vault Hill have forged their sharp wares in a relatively short space of time, channelling their palpitating energy alongside themes that cover political issues, materialism, inequality, marginalisation, and indefinite detention. Releasing their debut EP Amber Falls in 2022, Vault Hill continue to command attention with each new release – a fact irresistibly driven home with their brand new single.
Also accompanied by a slick new music video, directed by Vidler Media, “27.1” is a powerful step forward for the Melbourne bunch.
