Anthemic bangers

This is Godsmack like you’ve never heard them. The sheer might, the power, the pull of their seventh studio album When Legends Rise demonstrates innovation in sound and a band secure in their own skin. Godsmack have turned out new tricks to awesome effect.

Take Unforgettable; raucous crowd chants get the heart pumping and prepared for the consecutive pounding tracks. Every Part Of Me, the album’s standout track, scratches in with metal-esque riffs that quickly edge into raw and unadulterated hard rock. This track is a particular success for front man Sully Erna, whose performance is only getting better with age. He demonstrates the greatest range we’ve seen from him in a Godsmack release, projecting with a pure power that takes the rest of the band’s melodic input to another level.

There are areas where Godsmack have pushed the edginess a little much, however, crowd chants a culprit and surfacing one time too many. Godsmack may have done better to focus solely on their newfound range, but then they’ve always been about the inclusion of their fans in what they do so it’s only natural they have several anthemic bangers in their new release.

Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Godsmack are proving that saying very, very wrong.
