WE CAME AS ROMANS // Roman Empire Conquering Australia

New York to New South Wales. Finally, We Came As Romans are coming back to Australia in May and vocalist Dave Stephens can’t wait. “Oh man, I’m so excited! Everytime we head down there – the weather, the beautiful coastline – we really just enjoy the people and the shows we play there. It’s almost like a vacation!”

With the band finishing their brand new record only a couple of weeks ago in freezing New York, it’s understandable Stephens is excited to be coming back down to sunny Australia with a (possibly) brand new arsenal of material. “We wrote about 36 songs and cut it down to around 10-11 by the end. Basically if a song had potential it got put in a separate pile, but if it didn’t, we just cut it. The huge difference with this record is that good songs weren’t enough; we just wanted great songs. We have a few that are really really heavy, but then we have a few that show our lighter side. We weren’t concerned about the direction the record was heading in though; we just wanted to write the best songs possible!”

The band must have a favourite destination after touring here so many times right? “We always have a really good time in Sydney, I always get really good vibes there. The Warped Tour was great, and then we had two full days off last time. I saw the whole city, and took a ferry; I don’t even know where!” he laughs. “It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been down to the whole country though, so hopefully we can let our Australian fans know we haven’t forgotten about them!”

Since it’s been so long, it’s sometimes difficult for a band to choose setlists for crowds who’ve been waiting years. “We’re going to be playing songs off our third record Tracing Back Roots because last time we were down there we had pretty much just released it. We’re going to play some material – depending on when we drop singles off this new record – we might be playing one of those… It hasn’t been officially decided yet though! That being said, we always put in material for older fans to let them know we appreciate them. A couple of songs off our first album, and our second one always make their way in there. Let’s be honest, we’ll probably be playing To Plant A Seed until the day we die,” he laughs.
