VANS WARPED TOUR // To Hit The Road In 2018 For The Last Time

With the end of Soundwave and Big Day Out, Australia has had to bid farewell to heavy music festivals in recent years. Now, our American punk brothers and sisters are joining us in our loss, as it has just been announced that 2018 will see the last ever Vans Warped Tour.

The statement was released via the festival’s Facebook page yesterday. “Today, with many mixed feelings, I am here to announce that next year will be the final, full cross-country run of the Vans Warped Tour,” said founder Kevin Lyman.

A number of reasons have contributed to the festival’s finish. In an interview with billboard.com, Lyman listed the rise of summer festivals, a shrinking list of acts and a decline in ticket sales as major contributors. Lyman founded the festival in 1995. He had three years of Lollapalooza under his belt prior. He stated that after 26 straight summers on the road, he is (understandably) tired.

“I wanna go have fun,” he said. “It hasn’t been fun the last few years.”

Over the decades, the festival has become a staple of the American summer, with its punters as varied as its lineup. Bands like NOFX, Blink 182 and Bad Religion have shared the bill with artists like Eminem, G-Eazy and Katy Perry.

“What has always made me proud was when I read that Warped was the most diverse show of the summer where you could find Eminem and Ice-T on the same stages as Sevendust, Pennywise, and 7 Seconds,” said Lyman.

No artists have been confirmed for the 2018 tour, but Lyman wants to make the final show one for the ages.

“You’re gonna see a big mix of bands I felt really embraced the Warped Tour lifestyle,” he said.

“I truly look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during this final cross country run, and getting to thank you for your support on this wild adventure. Until then, take care and be safe.”
