Set It Off are like Vegemite—you either love ‘em, or you hate ‘em. Their fourth studio album Midnight is about to spark yet another point of contest and debate but ultimately, Midnight may just be the spot on the radar that secures the Florida pop-rockers some more (and well-deserved) mainstream attention.

The follow-up to 2016’s Upside Down, Set It Off have taken the time to really delve deeper into the creative art of multi-instrumentation, building texture and creating an elaborate set of events. It may feel a bit showy-offy, but when your vocalist can blast on the clarinet, your guitarist can blare on a trumpet, and you can employ the skill and talents of a horn section, gospel choir and expose the instrumental talents of Reel Big Fish’s Matt Appleton, then your showmanship becomes an exciting series of events that doesn’t border on becoming a circus. Being a multi-instrumentalist in the case of Set It Off really gives your pop-rock an incomparable edge!

Set It Off push the limits of not only their musicianship, but their imaginations, with killer results.

Vocalist Cody Carson has always pricked up ears for his distinctive tone, one that wobbles on the edge of falsetto. In Midnight, he’s stretching for a yelp or several up that top end of his range, a suitable reach in order to pull off those awesome soul and R ‘n’ B style tracks like singles Midnight Thoughts and Dancing With The Devil. Those soul and R ‘n’ B licks have always been an undertone in Set It Off releases but here, those influences come to the forefront and really make the music pelt.

TLDR; Midnight is a bop, a complete and utter bop that sees Set It Off push the limits of not only their musicianship, but their imaginations, with killer results.
