PEARS // Screw Pain, Dig Pears ‘Green Star’

Right now, it’s very easy to get behind Pears. (Stream new album Green Star below!)

If you’re the type of person who prides themselves about jumping on a band’s, ummm, bandwagon, get ready to extol the virtues of the four-piece to all your mates who just want you to shut your goddamn mouth. This is the album that’s going to take them to the place where people are going to talk about in the revered tones often reserved for bands like Propagandhi or The Lawrence Arms. After their debut 2014 album Go to Prison, Pears have gotten better. In no specific way really – the albums share quite a few similarities – they’re just better now. The whole thing is just on the next level, the songs are more diverse and executed with a heightened understanding of how melody and hardcore should work together, the production is so much more dynamic – each smack of the snare is an energetic call to the pit, and the musicians are trying things on Green Star they probably wouldn’t have been capable of when they tracked Go to Prison.

This is the album that’s going to take them to the place where people are going to talk about in the revered tones often reserved for bands like Propagandhi or The Lawrence Arms.

All the improvements are exciting to hear, and what’s more they make you excited about the prospect of championing the band. There’s that intangible X-factor at play on Green Star, and it makes songs like Snowflake and the rock radio ready Cloverleaf sound epic, gnarly and honest. So bandwagon jumpers, fair warning, if you don’t dig Pears right now, you’ll never be able to claim you loved them even before they got big.

READ OUR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW EXCERPT WITH PEARS FRONTMAN ZACH QUINN!

You’d think things would be ace for New Orleans punk outfit Pears right now – they’ve just signed to Fat Wreck Chords and have their awesome sophomore album poised to drop.

But it isn’t.

Things are actually pretty fucked. When we talk to front man Zach Quinn the singer has busted up his hand on their Australian tour. He’s had to have surgery in a foreign country – “oh, we’re way in the red right now” Quinn says of how the surgery has impacted on the band’s finances. And to top it all off, when we’re talking he says to take his mind off things by seeing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which he is very excited about and has no misgivings that it might be a cinematic monstrosity. The dude just can’t catch a fucken break.

“Surgery and hospital added up to like $3,500… We’re in the red and we’re not exactly sure what we’re going to do yet,” Quinn says of the band’s most recent misfortune. He sounds pretty broken down. Because of the pain he’s in, it’s hard to get him to focus on the band’s new record, Green Star. So I wonder, what’s keep Quinn from just saying ‘fuck it’ and just bailing on the band?

“I think the only thing that’s stopping me from walking away is tenacity. The idea that we’re still not going to quit. That’s the only way I still want to be here. Sure, part of me really wants to be home now that my hand doesn’t work anymore, but we’re not going to quit. And that’s the only way we get through things like this, just by not quitting, we’ll find a way to get through it.”
